Popescu, Carmen, ed. (Dis)Continuities: Fragments of Romanian Modernity in the First Half of the 20th Century. Simetria 2010 88441 Composed out of three essays - one on architecture and the built space in general, a second one on the applied arts and their relationship to architecture and a third essay on the theoretical writings of the time on painting and sculpture, this book presents new topics on the Romanian art of the first half of the 20th century, situating them thoroughly in the international context of the time - for instance, there is a chapter in the essay on architecture on Le Corbusier's villa Jeanneret (La-Chaux-des-Fonds, 1912) and its relationship to Romanian vernacular examples, that the young architect had seen during his Voyage d'Orient. Moreover, the book provides new historiographic perspectives, proposing to look differentely at the usual chronology, (pre-war/ interwar/ postwar) - thus the first half of the last century is explored from different angles which stress the continuities between the periods. From the 1906 General National Exhibition in Bucharest up to the Reconstruction projects after World War II, the book explores the Romanian art and architecture in its constant dialogue with the international scene, ending with the brutal shift of the political change which installed the Communist regime. 228 pp., 142 ill Engl
